Join us for the unveiling of Reflections on Sunnyslope, a new public artwork that creates a cool and inviting space for the Sunnyslope community. Installed in the open circulation area between the playground and sports courts at Sunnyslope Park, this artwork provides much-needed shade and a communal retreat from the sun. Designed to reflect the natural beauty and unique landscape of the surrounding Sunnyslope and North Mountains, the canopy mimics their contours, offering a visual connection to the landscape just beyond the park.
At the heart of Reflections on Sunnyslope is community engagement. The public is invited to contribute personal reflections about the natural environment, sharing their thoughts through drawings and notes on colorful flags that will be attached to the underside of the canopy. These flags will come together to create a mirror image of the mountain silhouette above, turning personal stories and creative expressions into a collective tapestry of ideas and experiences.
This thoughtfully designed artwork not only provides a space for respite from the sun but also promotes awareness of heat resilience. The light green outer canopy surface is made from UV-resistant material that helps reflect solar heat, while the flags are made from durable, weather-resistant fabric. The steel structure utilizes matte colors to reduce heat absorption and features a heat-resistant finish, ensuring the artwork’s functionality in Arizona’s climate.
Reflections on Sunnyslope is more than just an artwork; it’s an example of how design can foster optimism and celebrate local character while addressing environmental challenges. By creating a communal space for shared ideas on heat readiness and environmental stewardship, this project contributes to the City of Phoenix’s leadership in adapting to extreme heat. It offers a creative solution that enhances the social and cultural qualities of the park, while promoting collective climate resilience.
We invite you to come celebrate the unveiling of Reflections on Sunnyslope, contribute your own reflections, and be part of this unique opportunity to connect with your community, share ideas, and enjoy the beauty of Sunnyslope Park.
