Step into the refreshing shade of the Botanical Canopy, designed by Bobby Zokaites, where vibrant design meets functional, cooling shade. As part of ¡Sombra! Experiments in Shade, this whimsical,  plant-like sculpture features leafy canopies made with over 10,000 feet of woven nylon parachute cord. Designed to provide much-needed shade while offering a dynamic visual experience, the colorful patterns overhead create a lively, ever-changing play of light and shadow.

“Big things become not only feasible but approachable, and even common, when there’s shared communal interest.”

Project Description

Using over 10,000 feet of nylon parachute cord, Zokaites woven Botanical Canopy structure is designed to resemble a colorful, abstracted plant to provide a whimsical, shade experience. Comprised of painted steel looms and woven surfaces using the French style of caning, these modular, leaf-like shade canopies will be woven with help from the community and engineered into position to combat the rays of the sun.
