Rincón de Color

April 19, 2025 through September 20, 2025

Rincón de Color

Featuring eight giant Alebrijes (mythical Oaxacan folk art animals) holding up an awning, this vibrant sculpture is painted with intricate designs and provides cooling, relaxing shade. Experimenting with an innovative solar-powered misting system equipped with motion detection technology, artists Jose Benavides and Joe Ray will unveil their delightful creation at a festive celebration in Spring 2025.

“This is an opportunity to create a temporary point of pride in the park with input from the community. Given that the area has a substantial Latino population, the Alebrijes bring whimsy and color, creating a colorful and inviting oasis, while reflecting the culture of the neighborhoods surrounding the park.”

Project Description

Rincón de Color, will create a vibrant 20′ x 20′ gathering space where towering Alebrije creatures provide shade. Alebrijes are colorful mythological folk art characters from the Oaxacan region in Mexico. This installation brings Mexican folk art to life, seamlessly blending function, and art in an inspiring outdoor setting. At each corner, 8-foot Alebrije animals will appear to support the shade structure, enhancing the illusion that these mythical creatures are holding it up. To enhance user comfort during the hottest parts of the day, motion operated misters will be installed within the structure, creating a refreshing oasis for all visitors.

This bold, experimental design fuses renewable energy, functionality, and vibrant imagery, transforming a portion of the park into an eye-catching oasis where comfort, safety, and creativity unite to redefine public spaces in a community park setting. This innovative use of renewable energy addresses Phoenix’s mission to be a heat-ready city, offering much-needed relief in the summer heat.
