The Burrow

Families will love cooling off at Roesley Park with “The Burrow,” a ¡Sombra! Experiments in Shade temporary art installation inspired by the Desert Tortoise. Just like this resilient creature who digs burrows into the ground to escape the heat, sharing the shade with an abundance of other desert wildlife, the “Burrow” offers a shady retreat for Phoenix residents of all ages.  Come and enjoy a playful, interactive space where you can dive into the wonders of our desert ecosystem and learn how you, too, can share the shade.

“We were immediately inspired by the Desert Tortoise, whose ability to adapt to the extreme climate of the Southwest created the perfect opportunity to bring a whimsical, airy and creative solution to Phoenix residents looking for reprieve from the summer heat. The Burrow follows in the footsteps of the Desert Tortoise – sharing the shade while encouraging people to “think outside the shell” when it comes to climate adaptation and community-based, heat ready solutions.”

Project Description

What better way to stay cool in the summer heat than by mimicking the behavior of Arizona’s very own Desert Tortoise?  From the coloring of its shell to the ability to retain water for months at a time, this iconic yet threatened species of the Southwest is uniquely adapted to the desert heat.  By digging burrows into the earth to stay cool, it creates much needed shelter for other species including mammals, reptiles, birds and invertebrates. Drawing inspiration from the desert ecosystem, The Burrow imagines the Desert Tortoise as a visually interactive experience and welcome reprieve from the summer heat for the residents of Phoenix; sharing the shade while encouraging people of all ages and abilities to “think outside the shell” when it comes to climate adaptation and community-based, heat-ready solutions.
